ANtics Episode 2.33: As the Macha Turns

Macha's sudden dismissal after the ALCS sweep surprised a lot of people, but here at the ANtics, we should have seen the warning signs along the way - as he played favorites with players, feuded with the front office, kissed up to umpires and generally tried to go his own way on a club when that wasn't the plan for a manager - an interchangeable cog.

Below - 10 different examples, all brought to you by the ANtics, that display the disconnect as it happened.

  1. He offered Adam Melhuse to be ejected instead of Bradley. (ANtics 2.32)
  2. He said it was "Us against the world." (ANtics 2.27)
  3. He threatened players with the "Vulcan Death Grip." (ANtics 2.23)
  4. Rather than arguing with umps, he offered them jobs. (ANtics 2.21)
  5. He openly called for "Kenny-ball" and threatened to subvert Billy Beane's plans (Antics 2.20)
  6. He feuded with Melhuse over alleged gum theft. (ANtics 2.12)
  7. He threatened to cut Saarloos if the pitcher didn't get a haircut. (ANtics 2.11)
  8. Saying things were "nebulous", he offered no strategy to break the team's inconsistency. (ANtics 2.10)
  9. In a Dusty Baker-esque move, he once challenged Zito to pitch from both sides of the mound. (ANtics 2.6)
  10. And always... the lineups. As the season dawned, he promised to bat Kendall cleanup. (ANtics 2.1)

That's just ten examples of how we knew there were "Disconnects" with Macha this season - and we didn't even break into the 2005 ANtics. As you know, Macha's been let go, and every day brings new insight into the clubhouse tumult that apparently defined the A's year. We look into the struggles, in "As the Macha Turns".

ANtics Comics Highlighted on Plasq Site

I got a pleasant surprise late this evening, when I visited plasq.com, the creators of Comic Life, the software program I use to create the ANtics comics each week. After having traded e-mails with the company's marketing manager about a month or so ago, he had elected to promote the ANtics on the site's user gallery, as an example of how customers were benefitting from Comic Life.

http://plasq.com/comiclife/gallery/

The gallery features a "thumbnail" image of one comic, which when clicked, pops into the browser and shows the comic in full-screen mode, with a "Next" button to take you through 18 selected ANtics episodes. The final page links back to my own gallery on the louisgray.com site.

I'm pleased in a very nerdy way. (It's the only way I know)

ANtics Episode 2.26: A's Fun and Games

The A's are a young team - there's no doubt about it. But part of the team's allure to fans is their kiddish behavior, their smiles and laughter, and some have given the team's attitude and camaraderie a great deal of credit for their success. The pictures prove it - as we find our men in green and gold simply acting like kids. Explains why I feel so old when I see their birthdates on the DiamondVision.

One Full Year Of... The ANtics

It's been a full year since the ANtics showed up and became a weekly feature on Athletics Nation. On July 24, 2005, Episode 1 of the ANtics: "Focus on Fundamentals" debuted, and the A's young stars tried to teach us a thing or two about the core elements of the game.

Since then, in the subsequent 30+ episodes of the ANtics, we've learned that Ken Macha knows Kung Fu, that Eric Byrnes so hates his old team that he's cursed them to sweeps against his current team not just once, but twice, that Stomper prefers warm-weather climates and wants to be assistant GM, that Ellis's shrink calls Crosby "Source of Pain", that Zito needs to keep his hair short in order to play well, that Barry Bonds has a certain attraction to our shortstop's rear, and that Swisher would seriously kill in order to defend his new buddy, Frank Thomas.

Of course, there's been a lot more than just those highlights. I thought you'd enjoy a trip down memory lane, celebrating one full year of the ANtics. You can even flip page by page, just like a real comic book!

ANtics Episode 2.19: Eric Byrnes' Curse Continues

When the A's traded Eric Byrnes to the Rockies last year, feelings on AN were mixed. Popular for his hustle and "grit", yet unpopular for his unconventional route to fly balls and propensity to pop up, Byrnes meant something to everyone. But, apparently the A's meant a lot more to Byrnes, a local Bay Area product. Returning to the Coliseum as a member of the Orioles in August, the Birds swept the A's in three games, which the ANtics first chronicled in "ANtics - Episode V: The Byrnes Curse".

A year later, Byrnes, now with the Diamondbacks, proved the guy can carry a serious grudge. Though not the focal point for any of the Diamondbacks' three wins, his curse lives on, and the A's again are on the losing end of a three-game sweep. The ANtics check in on the curse to see if anything can be done...

ANtics Giveaway to A's Players Today in Phoenix

On Friday, before leaving for Phoenix, I created a PDF file that contained all 14 ANtics comments to date, and had them printed on "good" color paper at Kinko's, and then had them sealed in a clear plastic cover. I made 10 copies of the 15 page document, at no small charge, and set out to see if I could hand-deliver the comics to the Oakland A's players who played the characters in the comic itself.

Today, before the game between the A's and the Anaheim Angels, I took my 10 copies and aggressively set out to find players who had been featured and might have time to read them. We found pitcher Barry Zito and handed him 3 copies, one for him and two more for him to hopefully pass around the clubhouse. I told him that in contrast to everyone else there who was angling for his autograph, that I wanted nothing and actually had something to give him. I said it was the comic strip from Athletics Nation that I worked on, and he said that he and the team was way into Athletics Nation.

3 down, 7 to go.

I then went up to the broadcast booth and found Ken Korach, who had spoken at last year's AN Day at Oakland Coliseum, and said we appreciated it, and gave him his copy. He said, "Is this mine to keep?" it was, and I left it.

4 down, 6 to go.

We headed back down to the bullpen, and left one in the bucket of balls where the A's relievers would wait. Somebody would get it.

5 down, 5 to go.

Then, walking back toward home plate, I spotted a man I thought to be A's general manager Billy Beane, but wasn't sure. This man had an FSN shirt on. So I took out an ANtics comic where Billy Beane was featured, and compared it to this gentleman. Now I was sure it was him. I walked up and opened the comic where he was featured, introduced the series, thanking him for his work and efforts in helping the site, and passed him his copy.

6 down, 4 to go.

Then we went over the A's dugout and saw the players warming up, hitting flyballs, playing catch, and getting ready for the game. A's star third baseman Eric Chavez came out to sign autographs. I got aggressive and made my way down there with the kids, and while helping the smallest kids pass their baseballs to the front, I introduced the ANtics to Eric and passed him 3 copies - again, one for him and two to share. He said that was cool, and kept signing.

9 down, 1 to go.

With the last ANtics book, we headed back up to the broadcast booth to announcer Ray Fosse, who was conducting an on-air interview. We waited for his interview to end, and they cut to commercial. At that point, I thanked him for reading the first ANtics episode on the air last year, and passed him his copy. He stood up and shook my hand and said thanks. I said thanks for his good work and wished him luck.

10 down. None left.

So, was it mission accomplished? I don't know. I really was hoping to get one for Joe Blanton, but he wasn't easy to get. And Ken Macha, another target, was at the team's other game. But I think we did well. We talked with Chavez, Zito, Beane, Fosse and Korach - all kingpins on the 2006 Oakland A's. And I hope the ANtics don't end up in the trash. But I feel it's not fair for just me to enjoy them, for if it weren't for the players, we'd have nothing to make up after all.

In that vein, the A's players - in true Hallmark fashion - show the love.

The second ANtics comic of 2006 was posted to Athletics Nation this morning, highlighting the advances the A's have made on the offensive side, to match up with what's expected to be one of the best pitching staffs in all of baseball. Spring training is under way, and while we're all watching to see how Bradley, Thomas and Loaiza integrate with their new teammates, many fans, reporters and the A's themselves are eager to see if the team's offense will show marked improvement over what was an inconsistent part of the team in 2005. In this edition of the ANtics, we talk with Blanton, Zito and others about whether they will get the run support they need to be successful.

ANtics That Never Saw the Light of Day

Unfortunately for me, the ANtics don't just up and write themselves... which means every once in a while, one of my half-baked ideas turns out to be just that... half-baked. Usually I catch myself before getting all the way through a strip, but sometimes, they're all written up before I realize its a creative disaster.

This evening, I posted two of the comics that never made to Athletics Nation in a diary on AN - the first being "Zito's Zen Routine", which debuted here earlier this week, and the second, a comic that examined the A's activities during a losing streak. Neither of the two comics were good enough or timely enough to hit the front page of AN, so they've been gathering figurative dust on my hard drive since their creation.

ANtics Extra: Zito's Zen Routine

Not all of the drafted ANtics comics have been posted to Athletics Nation - some with good reason. They just weren't funny. Here's one from the cutting floor drafted during the 2005 regular season, starring Oakland A's left handed ace, Barry Zito. Click the image for a larger picture.

Sneak Peek: ANtics 2.2 Coming Soon

As previously mentioned, the A's pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in Arizona earlier this week, and it's not too long from now before spring training games will begin, and we'll be well on our way to the regular season. It's time to start thinking baseball, and time to start thinking about the ANtics - just a small part of the great community that is Athletics Nation. More to come soon.

2006: The ANtics Take On the Off-Season

It was only a few months ago that the A's promising 2005 season came to a close in remarkably familiar fashion - but AN is very excited about the 2006 season, and the last few months have seen a great number of changes - with the additions of Esteban Loaiza and Milton Bradley, and the hard, but understandable, losses of Hatteberg and others.

We checked in with a few of the A's to see if they believe the change has been for change's sake or for the better - and when is it enough? Read on in the ANtics - 2006 style!
